About Object Lessons

Islington Education Library Service (IELS)

About the Library
The Education Library Service is part of the education service in the London Borough of Islington, and is managed by Cambridge Education @ Islington.

The Education Library Service has an extensive collection of resources, about 150,000 items. A major section is the Artefacts Library, a handling collection which includes original and replica historical objects, costumes, story-props, and objects to support work across the curriculum in a variety of educational settings. Its specialist staff have knowledge of education practice, library and museum work, and understanding of teachers' needs and children's learning.

Services provided by ELS

    • book box loans
    • artefact loan boxes
    • costume loans

How to use the service
Schools in the London boroughs of Islington and Hackney can subscribe to the full range of services on offer. Access to our services for schools in other areas, private schools and other users can be negotiated on an individual basis. Many schools borrow boxes on specific topics, e.g. Victorian childhood; Electricity and magnetism.

Costumes
Costumes can be borrowed by schools to support work in the curriculum, and by schools, theatre groups and other users for drama productions.

Where to find us
We are approximately 5 minutes walk from Archway Station.

About 'Object Lessons'
Work on the development of this site has been funded by a grant from the New Opportunities Fund Digitisation Programme with support from the Education Library Service and Cambridge Education @ Islington budgets. About 200 objects have been selected for this first phase of digitisation to indicate the range and diversity of the collection, but we hope that the site will expand as further funding becomes available.

The Education Library Service is part of the Sense of Place London consortium, a joint project of libraries, archives, museums and other organisations which can be found on http://www.londondiscovery.org.uk.
