How the site is Structured

The Seven Themes
The themes of Clothes, Homes, Work, Childhood, Health, Conflicts are subdivided into different historical periods and Cultures is subdivided into continents. Once you have entered a theme you can find out about the particular features of the section by clicking on 'How to Use this Section'.

You can view objects in the sections in two ways:
  1. Interactive Scene: There is an interactive picture at the start of each theme, showing some of the objects grouped together in a realistic context. Move your mouse over the picture to find objects in our collection. If a label appears next to the object you can click on the object to find out more about it. Some of the objects are animated and show how the object works. There are also sound effects in each of the scenes. For example in the scene from the Blitz in World War II you can hear the sound of a siren and bombs exploding. To return to the scene click on the theme's icon/name on the navigation bar.

  2. Historical and Geographical Subsections: By clicking on the subsections shown on the navigation bar.
    1. Click on the period or continent you are interested in to see a list of objects.
    2. Each object is shown by a thumbnail picture.
    3. Click on the picture to reach the object page.
    4. To return to the list of thumbnails click again on the country/period or explore a different country/period on the navigation bar.

Valid HTML 4.01!  Valid CSS!

CSS
The site uses Cascade Style Sheets (CSS) for the style of content, colours and text information. You'll still be able to access information if you browser doesn't support CSS.

Font Size
The text size for content text uses em values (rather than point, pixels or percentages) to let you use your own preferred browser settings. Standard font size is set to your browser's font size, the other styles are multiples of that size.

Images
All images on this site contain descriptive alternative text. In most cases images on the site will not require any additional descriptive information other than that which is provided in the ALT text description.

Links
Text links all include 'title' tags that provide additional information in the form of a pop-up tool tip when you hold your mouse over the link, when you tab to the link, or in the case of a text reader, spoken information about the link for those browsers that support the use of the title tag. Link to an external site will launch a new window.

Audio-visual resources
This site uses QuickTime technology for its audio and video resources. The choice has been made because, at this time, QuickTime is the most cross-platform technology available (i.e. resources can be embedded on pages and viewed without problems on both Macintosh and Windows platforms). Your browser should automatically direct you to the Quicktime site in case the plug-in is not installed. Alternatively, you can click here and follow the download instructions.

JavaScript
This site is enhanced with JavaScript. If you have JavaScript turned off or are using a browser that doesn't have JavaScript, you will still be able to use the site and access information, with the exception of games.

Frames
This site uses frames only for its theme pages. The top frame contains the main menu for the website and the second frame contains the theme illustration. By accessing the top frame, you may continue browsing the site's resources.
