Bicycle Rickshaw, Wooden Toy, Nepal

This is a painted wooden toy. Bicycle rickshaws are widely used in major cities around the world, especially in South and East Asia. They are large tricycles designed to carry passengers and are often for hire like taxis. They are sometimes decorated with intricate painting, or may be covered with cloth for the protection (from the sun – not traffic!) of passengers. They are a cheap and convenient way of getting around in Nepal and other cities, and as such they are a very popular mode of transport with locals and tourists. While some are battery operated, in the old city in Kathmandu you may see many examples of rickshaws powered simply by the strength of the man or boy on the bicyle and this little toy shows that mode of transport.
