Extending Snake Toy, India

This is a simple mechanical toy snake made from thin reeds joined in an extendable trellis structure. The heart shaped paper head is designed to look like a cobra about to strike and is decorated with coloured foil features. The ‘striking’ snake elongates when one of the reeds, the one at the back, is pulled causing the head to shoot forwards.

Dynamic toys like this one which demonstrate simple scientific concepts are an Indian tradition, sold at fairs and melas and were very inexpensive. Mane Kumria from Soma Books says that  ‘though we used to get a lot of such toys from street vendors in India this tradition has now virtually disappeared’. They match scientific concepts and traditional design in an entertaining way and are often made from simple local materials.
