Woman's Suit, 1960s, Original

This elegant suit is a copy of an outfit by the French designer Christian Dior. It is made of hand woven wool and has been hand printed in a design of three colours on a cream background. These colours - brown, reddish brown and bluish grey - make a swirling pattern rather like ripples on water. The skirt looks as though it is pleated but this is just the way the pattern has been printed in strips; in fact, the skirt is quite straight, just widening out at the hem. The jacket is blouson-style, which means it ends at the hips in a band and buttons up to the neck. It has two fake pockets at waist level - they are there for decoration only as bulges would spoil the outline of the jacket!

The suit was made in Donegal, Ireland.

The crepe blouse underneath the suit was designed to match it. The blouse has a tie-neck with one end embroidered in the same colours as the suit.
