Woman's Kameez, India

The most common form of women's clothing in India is the Sari. This item of clothing consists of a length of cloth, 5 or 6 yards (4.55 to 5.46 metres) long, which is wound and draped around the body. There are different ways of doing this in different parts of the country. Although the Sari is still the favoured garment, the Salwar Kameez, a garment of the north of India, is fast gaining in popularity.

The garment shown here is part of a Salwar Kameez, which is made up of two garments. The long flowing dress is the Kameez and it is worn with loose trousers, gathered at the ankles, which are the Salwar (not shown). Salwar Kameez come in different styles, from very plain ones for working in to more decorative ones. The cotton Kameez shown here is modern and decorative. It has an underskirt in pale blue with a white overskirt printed with abstract shapes. The bodice is embroidered in diamond shapes, each containing little mirrors. The border of the bodice, the cuffs and the centre of the skirt are also covered in embroidery, tiny twinkling mirrors and gold beads.
