Waffle Iron, 1940s, Original
Waffles are made from a batter of flour, milk and eggs. They are light and, like pancakes, (but unlike bread) quick to make. A waffle is made in a waffle iron - an implement made of two metal plates hinged together. The plates were originally made from iron, hence the name.
This electric waffle iron is circular in shape although others are square or even heart-shaped. The whole of the appliance is chromed so that it looks attractive and more important, is easy to clean. The baking surfaces are of iron and have a pattern of studs, which created square holes in the waffle. There is a red light on the front of the appliance that lit up when the waffle iron was hot and ready to use.
