Animal Feeding Bag, Reused Rubber Tyre, Morocco

In many countries, people use old rubber tyres to make new objects. This bag from Morocco is for feeding animals; horses, camels and donkeys could put their long noses into it and be able to reach the food.

Thin strips are cut from the discarded tyre with a very sharp knife. The strips are then glued, sometimes nailed, and, as you can see in the image, stitched to produce a recycled object that is sturdy and will last for many years. Other objects made from recycled rubber are children’s swings, shoes and sandals, water bottles, buckets and decorative jewellery. Ruth and Neil Thomson refer to this reuse as ‘rescued rubber’.  “Almost half of all discarded tyres are burned as fuel for cement kilns, pulp and paper mills or electricity stations”. (Rubber. Ruth and Neil Thomson, 2006, London: Franklin Watts.)
