Bowl, Recycled Materials, South Africa

This bowl is made from a papier-mâché of recycled office paper and covered with reused sardine tin wrappers. Pilchards, an oily fish, are an excellent source of protein and Omega 3 and are quite cheap to buy, either fresh or tinned. The fish are usually caught in the cold currents off the west coast of southern Africa.

The bowl was made by Wola Nani in Khayelisha, outside the city of Cape Town, South Africa. The group’s crafters make many useful and decorative items and the organisation itself is committed to people living with HIV and Aids. Everything produced is fairtrade and ethical, and much of it uses recycled material. You can read some of the crafters’ stories when you visit the group’s website www.wolanani.co.za
