Dokra Work Peacock, Recycled Metal, India

This little bird model is made from recycled scrap metals – tin, brass copper,  iron - which are melted together and extruded into wire.  The base and body of the peacock are made from black clay; the wire is then coiled and woven about the clay while still hot. The piece is then fired to set it together.

Dokra metal craft is made by tribal people living in three states in Eastern India - Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Most of the tribal people make dokra in their 'spare time' as they usually work as landless labourers. The craft itself is made by men while the kilns are fired with firewood collected by women. This makes it a seasonal product as kilns cannot be fired during the monsoons.

The peacock is the national bird of India. Peacocks are often represented in Hindu temple art. Krishna wears a peacock feather in his headband, and Skanda (Hindu god of war) rode on a peacock called Parvani. In Buddhism the peacock represents wisdom.
