Dustpan, Reused Metal, Zimbabwe

This dustpan from Zimbabwe is made from a vegetable oil container. Olivine is a main manufacturer of foodstuffs in Zimbabwe so this brand name is well known there. The name can be seen on the inside of the dustpan as can the writing telling us that the pure vegetable oil is ‘clearly the best.’ The outside of the dustpan is plain, as it would have been the inside of the original container.

The dustpan is sturdily made with the edge at the front folded back to make the scoop stronger. For such a functional object, it has a rather elegant handle which is made of one piece of metal, folded so that the pattern is glimpsed inside, formed into a rectangular shape, and welded to the base. This is a very attractive and useful object.
