Shoulder Purse, Reused Drinks Can, Zimbabwe

A drinks can turned into a strong shoulder purse… How do you think this is done?

Each bag this Zimbabwean craftsman makes is unique because of the different colours and designs on the cans he uses. Here you see a bag made from Frostie beer shandy cans.

This is the process he uses:

1. The cans are washed, the ends cut off and the can is sliced open down the side.

2. Each can is then flattened and cut into the shapes needed using a template. For this bag there is a front and back, two side pieces, a base and then the flap.

3. Each piece is then drilled with holes at even intervals.

4. The pieces are then joined together using wool with crochet stitches.

5. The flap is joined to the main bag with a small piece of Velcro.

It is a tricky process because he has to use sharp tools and a drill but he can create strong bags that are slightly crinkly to the touch.

Can you estimate how many cans have been used to make this one bag?
