Pot, Reused Newspapers, Brazil

This small pot is made from rolled newspaper. Newspapers as well as many other paper products are very often throw away objects, made for the day and then binned. (Hopefully into the recycling box!) Over a quarter of old newspapers in the UK are recycled to make newsprint again by washing off  the ink, turning the paper back to pulp and adding it to new pulp for paper making.

In Brazil paper rolling is a popular way of re-using newspapers and magazine pages. This pot is a very simple woven design reflecting traditional weaving skills. When paper is rolled up it becomes much stronger and the different print and pictures on the rolled paper can add to the pattern design of the finished piece.
